This skirt was a gift from a man whom I adore, but not in the way he needed me to, and that's why we no longer speak. It was a complicated situationship that faltered in trust and communication, and I knew, from the onset, it wouldn't work. But I stayed because I wanted it to and, despite never saying it, I knew he loved me.
I loved him too, at one point, but he eventually, in my eyes, became unreliable and was, in my opinion, disrespectful towards me. So, I just stopped believing him, and his word lost all its meaning to me in the end. I didn't trust him anymore, and the accumulating resentment began to seep into other, unrelated areas of our untitled relationship. It was destructive. It collapsed. I fell out of love. But much to his credit, he did try -- this skirt is PROOF. It was a belated, albeit sincere, and dedicated effort to fix things, but the rupture of trust was, for me, ultimately irreparable. I couldn't feel the same way anymore.
And I know this story sounds all sad and shit, but I promise you it's not! This skirt was a token of love and will remain so for all eternity. Think of it as a family heirloom -- sans the family part and replace that with a brief-but-complicated-hook-up-semi-relationship. That's just as meaningful, in my opinion. Plus, a good run is better than a bad stand, no?
