I am at peace with my past but do not wish to revisit it. I do not want to reread my old journals, or scroll through my Snapchat Memories, or walk past my old apartments. I do not want to go to the Blue Bottle on Greenwich Street, or Battery City Park, and I do not want to take the 6 Train. I do not want to confront the memories that resurface when doing any of these things, so I take longer routes, and scarier trains, and stuff all the rest of it into a big bag under my bed, never to be seen again.
I do all this in spite of not having any painful memories attached to these things I avoid. I harbor no anger, disdain, or ill-will towards my past and its parts, but I prefer not to revisit it. I’m too much of a hoarder to part with any of it – my old set of keys, class notes, pictures my ex-boyfriend took, pottery we made – it’s all here, and safe, and well taken care of, but I won’t pick it up. I won’t touch it. I won’t clean it, out of fear that I might remember something I do not want.
As is often the case with me, I do not have these issues with clothes. I still wear the pants I was wearing when I got my first period, the shorts my ex bought me on Black Friday, and the purse that was snatched off my shoulder (and later recovered) on Stanton Street. A new outfit presents new opportunities for new memories, a chance to reinvent oneself, and the potential to get laid if you’re hot enough. That’s why buying new clothes is always a good idea. Please, believe me about this because I am very smart! So, if you, like me, prefer to be happy, I strongly encourage you to buy this dress.
